The site is on a prominent street corner on the edge of the Babbacombe conservation area. To the north and east there good sea views and the design seeks to take full advantage of these views.
The development provides 9 age restricted apartments aimed at the higher end of the market. Apartments are larger than normal in this sector, with large living rooms and flexible spaces. Some apartments include mezzanine levels and double height spaces over the lounge.
The design follows the character of the surrounding early 20th Century estate, the result of a thorough analysis of the context and its distinguishing features. This should ensure that the finished building will sit comfortably in its setting and strengthen the coherent character of this part of Torquay.
Williams Lester worked closely with the Local Authority planning and conservation team in the development of the design, working through a number of different iterations of the design before settling upon the scheme shown here.
