FORMER JAMES BROTHERS SITE, HAMWORTHY, POOLE
The development of this former industrial site next to the port is part of a wider regeneration of the lower Hamworthy area in Poole.
There was a previous approval on the site which was partially built out. Our aim was to improve upon the approved scheme in terms of volume, views, appearance and the quality of the urban realm.
The arrangement of circulation cores and layout of the blocks ensures that nearly all apartments have direct views out over Poole Harbour and Brownsea Island, and most apartments have dual aspects.
The design is strongly articulated. Going up the building, the brick elements step back to provide terraces, while the white elements rise further, creating a series of vertical elements form the street. The upper floors sit back from the edges of the building to reduce the perceived overall height. These floors are clad in a light aluminium frame, diffusing the mass against the sky.
At street level, the entrances are defined by prominent glazed entrance lobbies under angled projecting canopies. Along Norton Way these are raised half a storey above the street, overlooking the street and giving residents more privacy.
